By training in a “root-like” cascade from district to 12 wards down to each household, the Bắc Từ Liêm Women’s Union turned every member into a green ambassador in the fight against plastic waste.
From the final months of 2021, activities began to be coordinated and deployed in Bắc Từ Liêm District with training sessions on Plastic and health, and communication skills training, aiming to help the Women's Union officials and residents raise their knowledge about plastic waste and become aware of the negative impacts of plastic on human health. To have quality training sessions, the project team organized consultation meetings with the Bắc Từ Liêm Women's Union to clarify the current situation, the solutions, and the local priorities toward resolving plastic waste pollution. Closely following the local reality based on the information provided, the project team received very enthusiastic support from the Women's Union officials, as the training rooms were all filled to capacity. This was an extremely meaningful signal, and thanks to it the project team could continue to develop the training in a root-like manner, not stopping at the district level but spreading from the district down to 12 wards, and from the wards down to each resident. With the wish that each woman would be a green ambassador, in the local training sessions the project team renewed and refreshed some concise, easy-to-understand approaches so that each participating woman official could try her hand at becoming an instructor for the sisters in the Union.
Notably, from the figures that testify to the effort and the influence being scaled up in the community, more than 140.8 tons of waste, of which 51.4 tons was plastic waste, was collected through this event, along with an amount of money raised of 486,753,700 VND, of which 128,491,200 VND supported local charitable organizations.
After the training process, more than 300 sisters were supported with the necessary equipment to be able to carry out sorting and recycling at home. As of now, just the waste sorting and recycling model alone has been and is being maintained at 250 households, and the organic composting model is maintained at 13 households, and they regularly update the project team on the positive results in order to continue scaling the model together to even more households.
The success of this partnership has created a solid foundation for the Women's Union to continue to successfully spark a series of impactful initiatives that not only raise environmental awareness but also promote the mission of cleaning up plastic waste in Hà Nội during the three years of accompanying the project.
Within the framework of the LSPP project, the Women's Union organized an impressive domestic waste collection campaign lasting 14 months, from March 2022 to April 2023, attracting more than 20,000 sisters from 13 wards to actively join hands in the spirit of a green community, aiming to build the habit of sorting across the district.
Through cultivation and real operation, alongside local activities, the Women's Union developed a very practical new model: the refill station — a station whose main function is to provide convenient nylon bags but which are refilled through the participation of residents and the local authorities joining hands to maintain it. The model is considered an initiative that creates sustainable impact for waste sorting and a steadfast belief in the cooperation of individuals contributing to the value of reuse in the community.
The impact of these activities spread throughout the community, especially positively to the community of women with disabilities. Ms. Nhân, President of the Women with Disabilities Sub-association, highly appreciated the practical significance of these initiatives, highlighting their role in reducing plastic waste pollution and demonstrating the creativity of women with disabilities. Ms. Yên, a member of the Women with Disabilities Union, shared her joy, expressing pride at having created products on par with those of able-bodied people. In the face of the proud achievements of the Women's Union, they not only contributed financially to common activities but at the same time also emphasized the financial value in resolving plastic waste, spreading meaning and inspiring the local community to take action.
