The resource-collection carts pushed daily by women’s associations have become a familiar sight in Đà Nẵng — where waste is sorted, recycled and turned into a fund for people in need.
Sitting neatly on the sidewalk in the Bình An residential area, Đà Nẵng city, is a pretty resource-waste collection bin, decorated with whimsical recycled flowers, which the Bình An Women's Sub-association of Thanh Bình Ward, Hải Châu District built to collect recyclable waste in the surrounding residential area. With eyes full of pride, Ms. Lan Hương, president of the Bình An Women's Sub-association, opened the story of the fight against plastic waste.
The movement of collecting and sorting waste at source has spread widely, because most of the Women's Sub-associations in Đà Nẵng city responded and carried it out enthusiastically with many rich and creative activities. Ms. Huệ, of the Green Living for the Environment Club of the Trung Nghĩa 3 Women's Sub-association, Hòa Minh Ward, Liên Chiểu District, confided: “In the past, my family and the surrounding households had no habit of sorting waste; whatever was convenient, we just dumped it all into one bag and threw it away. But after joining the Women's Union's training, I understood the importance of fighting plastic waste. In particular, as a member of the Green Living Club, I have to take the lead even more, setting an example for everyone to follow.”
The initiative “Mobilizing Green Living Clubs to participate in community waste management in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic”, carried out in 2021–2022, was co-designed and implemented by GreenHub and the Women's Union (Hội LHPN) of Đà Nẵng city. GreenHub provided technical support on training, supplied equipment, and supported communication campaigns on plastic waste. The Women's Union of Đà Nẵng City established 07 Green Living Clubs (CLB) in 07 districts, with a total of 126 members, and issued operating guidelines for the clubs. At the same time, in order to support the clubs, GreenHub and the Women's Union provided vehicles and waste collection bins, and organized training on plastic and the effects of plastic waste on the environment and human health.
Furthermore, by 2023, on the basis of the results already achieved, the Women's Union of Đà Nẵng city proactively scaled up an additional 06 new clubs in order to continue promoting the good practices of the Green Living Club initiative in collecting recyclable waste, and to strengthen broad communication in the community about sorting waste at source. The image of the Women's Union sisters cheerfully pushing carts while spreading awareness of environmental protection has become no longer unfamiliar to local residents. At first, only a few people were interested, but gradually, with the enthusiastic and proactive spirit of the Green Living Clubs, the number of people responding to the waste collection movement increased day by day and became a daily habit of the people of Đà Nẵng.
The initiative helped the Women's Union promote its role of directing and guiding the clubs, building capacity for officials, and strengthening the communication effect in waste sorting. At the same time, the clubs were also supported in promoting community participation in waste sorting. In addition, the Women's Union and the Green Living Club regularly organize activities to inspire local residents. Never ceasing to strive to create a better life for the residential area, the Women's Union of Đà Nẵng city actively coordinated with GreenHub to organize many activities to reduce plastic waste, returning the color green to the city. They are the very people who day and night nurture the green dream, so that the roads and alleys throughout Đà Nẵng “bloom”, spreading fragrance and inspiration to everyone.
Undaunted by difficulties, these women, carrying within them a flame of enthusiasm and love for the environment, have been contributing to building a green and clean Đà Nẵng city. The resource-waste collection model has become more sustainable than ever with the determination and initiative of the Sub-association members in the fight to reduce plastic waste pollution. To date, the clubs have collected 65,316kg of waste, of which 1,869kg is plastic waste. The funds raised from recyclable waste have been used for fundraising, equivalent to 43 million to support disadvantaged people in the area.
These are all high-value waste. The money earned from selling the waste, we use entirely for volunteer activities. The most notable is providing free meals to people in difficult circumstances. Besides protecting the environment, we can also help those struggling to make a living in the city. Very happy, very joyful.
