A vacant lot once a hotspot for illegal dumping in Đà Nẵng is now a colourful recycled playground — the ward’s own idea, built from wood and low-value plastic.
In the residential areas of Da Nang city there still exist waste hotspots that are not gathered and collected according to regulations, which increases the generation of pollution, the spread of waste and the loss of visual appeal. The vacant lot in the Binh An 1 residential area was one such hotspot. With the initiative of turning a waste hotspot into a recycling playground serving communication and learning about waste sorting at source, the Division of Natural Resources and Environment of Hai Chau district and the People's Committee of Hoa Cuong Nam ward carried out the renovation of the land into a recycling playground. Not only reusing and recycling plastic waste, communicating to raise awareness and promoting behavior change, the playground transformed a spot of pollution and accumulated waste that harmed urban aesthetics into a place for children to play and learn and a place for the cultural and spiritual life of residents.
A recycling playground is a sustainable choice for the environment because it is a combination of friendly materials. With 02 main areas, the Binh An recycling playground has an activity area and a learning area. This playground uses pieces of wood and products recycled from low-value plastic. The playground has a Green House to hold high-value waste for fundraising, seats made from wheels and wood, and a reading area with a bookshelf recycled from a plastic drum, and so on. From this, a spacious, safe and highly aesthetic space for both children and adults was created. This playground reduces the amount of waste, enhances the productivity of resource use, and its design leans toward flexible functionality.
What is special is that building the playground was entirely the idea of the People's Committee of Hoa Cuong Nam ward, with consultation and finishing suggestions from the LSPP project team. This shows just how great the determination and hope of the People's Committee of Hoa Cuong Nam ward were to reduce plastic waste! After many rounds of revision, receiving feedback and finalizing the project, Hoa Cuong Nam ward reached a consensus on building the playground.
Not merely a waste hotspot renovated into a recycling playground, this playground was also “raised up” through care, attention and preservation, while at the same time mobilizing contributions of financial resources and labor days from many of the stakeholders, from the local government to the residents. After a great deal of effort and contribution from the local government, businesses, social organizations as well as the residential community, on June 5 the playground was inaugurated, becoming a colorful destination for children to play and learn.
“The children love it so much, playing until late afternoon and evening. The playground will certainly be a destination for the children in the residential area, where they can both take a break after school hours and learn about recycling plastic waste and protecting the environment. This model should be replicated to more and more vacant lots, both creating a useful play space for children and reducing plastic waste.” - shared Ms. Dinh Thi My Hanh, Vice President of the Women's Union of Hoa Cuong Nam ward.
Each residential area in Da Nang city has its own very distinctive and unique activities for reducing plastic waste. The small daily actions of the residents and the local government are helping to sow green seeds for the Earth.
Starting from the actual situation of the locality, through inspection and survey of the area, we saw that within the ward there were still many vacant lots that were not well managed, leading to the dumping of waste and construction debris that polluted the environment and urban aesthetics. With the attention of the People's Committee of Hai Chau district and the Division of Natural Resources and Environment, we came up with a thought and an idea, and reported to the leaders of the district People's Committee, to make use of a vacant lot in the Binh An residential area.
