Wherever needed, the youth are there — Hòa Vang’s blue shirts brought composting to every garden, turning food waste into an abundant source of fertiliser.
The image of energetic young people in green shirts, undeterred by sun or rain, always smiling even as sweat beads on their foreheads, has become familiar to families and businesses in Hoa Vang District. Troubled by the problem of littering right in the lush green gardens - the main source of income for local residents - these young people in green shirts resolved to take the lead on the journey to reduce plastic waste pollution with local solutions.
Sorting waste at source raised a problem: there needed to be a way to process and recirculate the waste immediately afterwards, so as not to waste these resources. Recognizing that organic waste is always the largest volume of waste, the model of composting organic fertilizer from food waste right in the garden was born, carrying the Youth Union's hope of reducing waste, protecting the environment, and bringing an abundant source of organic fertilizer to households in Hoa Vang District.
After many rounds of surveying and mobilizing residents, the Youth Union selected 20 households to pilot the organic composting model, with the selection criteria being families that wished to implement the model, were devoted to agricultural products, and already had a garden at home. The product created is used to fertilize directly in their own gardens, which both helps reduce waste and save on fertilizer costs, and contributes to protecting the environment.
At first, the Youth Union still faced many difficulties, such as residents not being used to sorting household waste, or the Union members being young and thus not having much agricultural experience, so they could not give detailed guidance to residents in the community. With support from the project in connecting experts and mobilizing resources, together with youthful energy and determination, in only a short time, the volunteer youths in green shirts communicated, persuaded, and helped a number of households take part in sorting waste and composting organic fertilizer.
To date, all 20 selected households practice waste sorting and composting extremely effectively, reducing the amount of waste released into the environment, and especially, the gardens of these households are all lush and healthy. The Youth Union applied technology in connecting the families by opening a Zalo group so that everyone could update information and share useful composting and gardening tips.
Not stopping at the waste collection and organic composting model, with support from the Green Development Support Center (GreenHub), the Youth Union also actively promoted and helped 11 beverage businesses in the area use reed-grass straws to replace single-use plastic straws, protecting the environment.
The Hoa Vang District Youth Union will continue to mobilize socialized resources to implement and promote the food-waste composting model, as well as launch an emulation drive across the whole Union on reducing the use of plastic waste and sorting waste, continue to mobilize socialized resources to help food and beverage businesses replace plastic products with environmentally friendly products, and continue to maintain the scrap-collection and waste-sorting models to raise funds, such as the “house of waste” and “house of batteries” models.
“Wherever it is needed, the youth are there; whatever is difficult, the youth take it on” - with youthful energy, passion, and a spirit of readiness to contribute to a better life, the Youth Union is writing wonderful stories in the fight against plastic waste, restoring the fresh green color to the beloved Hoa Vang District.
At present, the district already has many waste collection models, along with guidance for Youth Union members and residents on sorting waste at source. Twice a week, the Union's units go out to deploy scrap-collection models in the residential areas. This model has already been replicated across 10 Union branches of the whole commune, and has been enthusiastically embraced by the people.
